Artist's Comments

I had forgotten about this picture I did a couple of years ago for my Mother-in Law. She loves to camp and be outdoors all the time. Ommie has taught me how to canoe, pitch a tent, build a fire and bake a cake over an open fire. She begged me to paint her something, so I chose our State Bird. The Meadowlark.

Acrylic paint.

Thanks. Meadowlarks are thick around here. The locals refer to them as line quail, because the birds sit on the powerlines and resemble quail, then non-local hunters shoot a bunch of the birds and get ticketed by fish and game. The fine is like a $1,000.00 a bird. Sad thing is they don't look like quail up close. You would think people would learn.

Thank you. I wish the image had come out better, the photo looks a little washed out.

Nope, not ususally. They tend to stay on the ground. Every so often you will see a turkey on a line and that is just strange

Right. Ya know, I do stalk animals - with my camera - and I do make it a point to know something about the things I am shooting at. You would think, if carrying a gun, that knowing what you were shooting at would be, I dunno know...kinda standard.

Of course, I was listening to some tourists the other day at one of the parks we hang at. They were happily convincing each other the pelican they were looking at was a bald eagle. I couldn't decide whether to laugh at them or strangle them.

I would pay admission to see a turkey on a wire! Once in a while one of the herons or egrets will give it a go around here. FUNNY. Did you see Pixar's "For the Birds"? Looks just like that. Big bird, long legs, teetering back and forth on a wire. We always wonder if they think it's some kind of fun ride.
